You've Got to Start somewhere...

Every year I give my children a Christmas tree ornament that symbolizes something about the past year....sports they played, a favorite food, animal etc. It has become one of my favorite traditions. I started this tradition way back in 2009. I know, lame. I meant to buy an ornament every year since they wore born, but I just got a late start. A really late start. Well, NOW it is a tradition!!

I was also a little late giving them out since I stuck them high up in my closet and forgot about them. Friday night before we went to get the tree I dug them out and wrapped them up.
(Did you notice the cafeteria style plates? Somebody-Clay-doesn't like for his food to touch. He gets that from his father)

Cricket got a soccer ball.

Clay got a pirate flag.
And three guesses as to what Butterball got...

Yep, a lobster. This is definitely the year of the gobbers.
Do you have a fun family tradition that gets you in the holiday spirit?

  1. Stockings is the favorite for my kids and they are 29 and 32 - last year I mentioned stopping and they were shocked out of their socks! My daughter law loves it (she's from Cambodia because she's never experienced Christmas before. The difference when their older = they get smoked oysters, ski socks, pate, chocolate covered cherries... you get the drift! Hugs, Jennifer

  3. I do that, too, though they are not necessarily representative of the year. I wish they were. But they have so many ornaments now that when they leave home {sniffle}they will have a nice tree. All of yours are perfect {need to get my girls those soccer balls next year} but I have to say, love the GOBBER the best.

  5. I do the same thing for my kids!

My neighbor did it for me when I was a kid and I tragically lost the box in a move somewhere in my 20's. I still mourn it.

  6. Love Butterball's oh-so-perfect lobster! Too funny! My kids get an ornament every year but it's usually one I let them pick out. Not sure that's the best way to do it as we come up with some goofy looking ones, although I do my best to steer them toward something appropriate. Maybe I need to adopt your tradition and buy them myself!

  8. how crazy! My mom has done this for us since we were born- and it makes it so fun to decorate the tree! She said at one time that she would give them to us once we had our own family... but she couldn't part with them (I don't blame her!)

Now she gives all us ornaments every year as well for our own trees... this is a fabulous tradition!

  15. So sweet! My girls are big soccer players as well! We have a similar tradition over here...every year we go to the local Nursery which turns into a winter wonderland, to visit Santa, pick out our tree and each child gets to pick an ornament. This year it was a race car, sparkly cell phone and a peace sign! :)

  24. We've done this for a decade, though it took me until a couple of years ago to write down on a list the year and the why for each one. The list stays in the Xmas storage box--do yourself a favor and start that now!
