Every year I give my children a Christmas tree ornament that symbolizes something about the past year....sports they played, a favorite food, animal etc. It has become one of my favorite traditions. I started this tradition way back in 2009. I know, lame. I meant to buy an ornament every year since they wore born, but I just got a late start. A really late start. Well, NOW it is a tradition!!
I was also a little late giving them out since I stuck them high up in my closet and forgot about them. Friday night before we went to get the tree I dug them out and wrapped them up.
(Did you notice the cafeteria style plates? Somebody-Clay-doesn't like for his food to touch. He gets that from his father)

Yep, a lobster. This is definitely the year of the gobbers.
Do you have a fun family tradition that gets you in the holiday spirit?

Stockings is the favorite for my kids and they are 29 and 32 - last year I mentioned stopping and they were shocked out of their socks! My daughter law loves it (she's from Cambodia because she's never experienced Christmas before. The difference when their older = they get smoked oysters, ski socks, pate, chocolate covered cherries... you get the drift! Hugs, Jennifer
ReplyDeleteAdorable! And yep, it's definitely a tradition now.
ReplyDeleteI do that, too, though they are not necessarily representative of the year. I wish they were. But they have so many ornaments now that when they leave home {sniffle}they will have a nice tree. All of yours are perfect {need to get my girls those soccer balls next year} but I have to say, love the GOBBER the best.
ReplyDeletehahahahahaha!The last one is hilarious!!
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing for my kids!
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor did it for me when I was a kid and I tragically lost the box in a move somewhere in my 20's. I still mourn it.
Love Butterball's oh-so-perfect lobster! Too funny! My kids get an ornament every year but it's usually one I let them pick out. Not sure that's the best way to do it as we come up with some goofy looking ones, although I do my best to steer them toward something appropriate. Maybe I need to adopt your tradition and buy them myself!
ReplyDeleteIt is never ever to late to start a tradition. Love yours.
ReplyDeletehow crazy! My mom has done this for us since we were born- and it makes it so fun to decorate the tree! She said at one time that she would give them to us once we had our own family... but she couldn't part with them (I don't blame her!)
ReplyDeleteNow she gives all us ornaments every year as well for our own trees... this is a fabulous tradition!

ReplyDeleteI like that you give them their ornaments before the tree is up...I always give them at christmas. I may have to change my routine.
ReplyDeleteOh and I love Butterball! Is he still wearing is gobbers??? You may have to frame those suckrers once he finally retires them.:)

What a lovely tradition! We do the holiday library books every year and when my kiddies are older the books will be for them. We do ornaments from our travels for our tree...a tradition my husband and I started 10 years ago!
ReplyDeletei love them! my husband and i have a similar tradition. and, i write the year on the ornament in an inconspicuous spot to remember what year it was from... :)
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing for my daughter. This year she got a sandcastle because when she plays with blocks she always says she is building sandcastles.
ReplyDeleteWe give each other new pajamas on Christmas eve. I love a cozy new pair of PJs. Love the ornament idea!
ReplyDeleteGreat finds. Love the lobster.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet! My girls are big soccer players as well! We have a similar tradition over here...every year we go to the local Nursery which turns into a winter wonderland, to visit Santa, pick out our tree and each child gets to pick an ornament. This year it was a race car, sparkly cell phone and a peace sign! :)
ReplyDeleteno but i'm totally stealing this one.
ReplyDeleteI do this too but need to step it up because I didn't get one last year. Two this year !
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice idea for the Christmas tree. First visit to your blog and I love it. Happy Holidays! towe.
ReplyDeleteCute charger. We have lots of ballerina, skiing and basketball ornaments...so you can imagine. Merry Christmas!

Sissy, that is a great tradition...do they make poo poo ornaments in case I wanted to copy this tradition..:-)
ReplyDeleteOur tree is full of baseballs, ballerinas, miniature Yankee stadiums...we love to unwrap them every year.
ReplyDeleteI get the boys a nutcracker relating to something they did or played that year too and Kate gets an ornament. I am running out of nutcrackers though and might need to swich the boys over to ornaments soon:)

ReplyDeleteso fun! what a great idea, I'm jewish, but I love all of the wonderful xmas traditions families have!! happy holidays!
ReplyDeleteWe've done this for a decade, though it took me until a couple of years ago to write down on a list the year and the why for each one. The list stays in the Xmas storage box--do yourself a favor and start that now!
