Yard Sale

Saturday morning I got an e-mail about a yard sale (Thank you Ann Hinson!). But not just any yard sale, this one was special. A couple who used to own two fabulous, eclectic, unusual, stores in Wilmington, the Red Dinette and the Gypsy Jewel Wagon, were opening up three storage units and selling everything!! Great news!! Sadly I didn't open my e-mail until 9:30, so by the time I got there at 9:45, they had been pretty much cleaned out. Here are a few things they had left...

Antique wicker chaise $250

Green Chair $40

I almost bought these chairs and...

and this table for $125. Why didn't I? Oh, I don't know. I had no place for them, I don't really like red and one more thing. I misread the price. It was $1250!! Only $1000 more than I thought. I was in the mood for a bargain!!

I don't have a price for this, just thought it was fun!

There were a lot of old, really different doors. I just couldn't get a good picture of them because they were all stacked up. This set was $200.

I thought this was a cool piece of architectural salvage for $35. I was going to get it for over my bed, but decided to skip it.

Loved this chair and it was only $3!!! I was ready to haul it back to my car but when I lifted up the cushion it was missing it's seat! I wasn't sure if I wanted that much of a fixer upper. I left it for the next lucky shopper.

A friend of mine, Betsy headed over to see what she could find and even though she was later than I, she still found a few treasures. One being this great clock for $5. She is going to put it her boys' room. It will look great against their bright blue walls.

She also found this teeny, tiny, framed roman numeral.
I am sure she'll find just the perfect spot for it!

So, what did I buy? Well, for starters...

This lamp made from an old porch post. It needs a new shade and a little TLC but for $5 I was willing to spruce it up. It's bigger than it looks, about 2 1/2 feet tall and I love it!!

This may be a stretch for you, but for some reason I loved this old photograph of the capital. It is 4 X 3, a real giant and I loved the colors. The photo is from the '50's, you can tell by the style of the cars and I thought it would be fun in my son's room.

Here it is hanging up. It needs to be lowered a tad but I didn't want to push my luck with my handy man. (By handy man I mean my husband) Did you notice the dip in the bed? What happened? Too many monkeys jumping on the bed. The price for this fabulous piece of history? Yes, I actually paid for this rat eaten, oversized picture..but only $5. I think it is a lot of bang for my buck.

My last purchase was this great hand painted sign for $25. It is 4 feet round and the colors are great. Even better, Grand Fond is a beach in St. Barth's and that is where we went on our honeymoon. It was like it was meant to be. I thought it would be perfect in my living room over my fireplace. And it was!!! It brought the whole room together and was the finishing touch I needed!! One problem. It was 10 inches too big....

I rolled it around the house and found 6 places it would work. I finally decided to hang it in the den because that is where we spend all lot of our time. I may need to shift some things around. I don't know if it looks too cluttered, but I am very happy with my big round sign. Someday I may turn it into a table, but for now I like it!!

O.K. Total for my shopping spree? $35. Not bad. If you went to the yard sale and were one of the lucky ones who got there at 8:00 please leave me a comment or e-mail me and let me know what you got!! I am oh so curious!!

Hope you had a great weekend!!

  1. Sissy, I ADORE your big round sign!! I almost bought something similar recently, but it was $125, so I let it go... You did so well, and it holds sentimental value. I love it. If I had gone, I'd have schlepped that chaise home. You know I have a problem with chairs, thinking they all want to come home with me! Can't wait to see what you do with the lamp . And I love that picture of DC. The scale is awesome. Betsy got some good things, too! Fun. You might have had too much fun if you'd gotten there early!
