It's Over

Do you remember a few weeks ago when I said I was really busy but couldn't say why? I posted about it here. Well the truth is I was training for the triathlon but didn't want to talk about it in case I wimped out and didn't finish. Getting up at 6 am on summer mornings to train really wasn't that fun.

After 3 months of running, biking and swimming until I wanted to scream, the big day finally came. This past Saturday I felt every one of my 45 years. The good news, I finished. The bad news, everyone and their grandmother seemed to pass me. And there may have been some bad language involved during the run. I also want to apologize to anyone who may have seen me during the second half of the run: I had to roll up my tank top and let my white flabby stomach get some air. No one should have to see that, but desperate times call for desperate measures. At least I had the sense of mind to roll it back down before the finish line.

I wasn't trying to break any records which was a good thing since my time was not great. I knew I was in trouble when I lined up on the beach with the other swimmers in my age group and realized I was the only one not in an official Speedo swimsuit. I stood out in my black tankini and polka dot bottoms. Shouldn't I get points for individuality? Anyone can be firm, fit and tan in a blue Speedo; so predictable. I am glad I completed the race, no walking, no crying, some cussing, but I don't care to repeat this experience...ever.

  3. Congratulations!!!! I did my first sprint Tri in August, Mountain Lakes Triathlon. I was determined right when I finished that I'd never do it again. The run about KILLED me. But a few hours later I was thinking about the next one that I could sign up for. I am addicted now and can't wait for Tri season to start next year. I wrote a couple of post's about it on my blog.
I was also not trying to break any records and doesn't it just make you want to drop a curse-bomb when someone who is double your weight, or age passes you!!! And who cares if you rolled your tank up, I am pretty sure that I saw some people that were in 2 piece speedo's that definitely should NOT have been. What's the point of showing all that? It doesn't make you that much faster.
You should be SO very proud of yourself! The training alone is so hard and time consuming, like everyday you are doing something for it. Not many people can say that they are a Triathlete!! That's what everyone at my race kept telling me, that once you have finished your first Tri, you are an official Triathlete. Sounds cool to me! Sorry for the novel! Congrats again!

  8. Congratulations - a huge feat!! I did a tri right before I got married and had my son and loved every minute of it. Ever since having my son, my body has changed and it has been so hard to get back out there!! My age isn't helping matters either!! You're a true inspiration - seriously!! Congrats, again!

  10. Good for you!! That is so impressive, truly. I've never been a swimmer (or cyclist for that matter), but one day I think I might shoot for a half marathon. Just haven't got there yet. You've inspired me to at least start thinking about it. Congrats, Sissy!

  13. You should get points for not following the crowd in the swim competition. Good for you! I really want to train for a race (not swimming), but I just haven't jumped off the cliff. It awesome that you did it. Even if you never do it again, you can say you completed a triathlon once.

  18. Congratulations! I am so impressed with your dedication and stamina. You must feel wonderful (albeit sore)...and you cut a chic and dashing figure out there, I must say.

I used to do triathlons back in the day and you have stirred up old memories. Yes, it was hard, yes, I was as slow as a turtle, but the adage about triathlons sticks: "It's a triathlon. All you have to do is try."

    Kudos to you!

  32. Well done!!! I am supposed to be training for a very difficult hiking trip in Bhutan in mid October. I understand your pain but do not have your self discipline and will really pay for it once on the mountain at 15000 ft plus...i am actually very nerveous but counting on my will power to pull through. i have total admiration for your determination and achievment.

  34. Congratulations!! That's awesome.

Oh, and by the way, I hate you. ;-) I decided earlier this year that I hate people who do triathalons. I don't get why you'd want to do that to yourself? I also know that I'd pretty much die if I tried. So, out of fear of the unknown and jealousy - I hate triathaletes....

But, seriously - congratulations! You finished, and I'm pretty sure that's the whole point.
