Crazy Good or Just Plain Crazy

Several months ago I saw this at one of my favorite secret, out of the way shopping spots.

I am thinking about driving out to see if it is still there. I have no idea of the price, but having bought a lot from this same guy, I know I could get a good deal. The more you buy, the less you pay. It would need some freshening up. New paint, new fabric.

It reminds me a little of this chair from Pieces Sold $2460

I didn't buy it because I didn't need it. Still don't. But for some reason I can't get the chair and ottoman out of my mind. What do you think? Am I out of my mind? Do you love it or hate it?

  1. It's certainly a statement piece, but I know with a little sprucing up you could totally pull it off! It reminds me of a wild, mid-century piece you'd find in a Wearstler interior ---such fun! xoxox katie

  2. The first photo may just be on a weird angle, but when you show the Pieces chair in comparison, I can see where you are going with this...and by going, I mean, GO GET IT!

  4. I rather like the garden feel of it. I always say if I can't get it out of my mind then a second look is always in order.

  7. Love it...especially the ottoman! The second picture reminds me of a chair my cousins (who had the hippest house in town) had in their billiards room in the 70's. We all fought over who got to sit in that chair...now we could just buy our own...if we had $2460!

  9. Very cool! Sounds like a fun project to freshen up with paint and new fabric. I'm sure you will enjoy it once you're done and hey, there's no way it will cost as much as the second pic so I say go for it!!

  13. Get it, get it, get it! It would look wonderful painted and would be inexpensive to get fabulous cushions for. I sat in a chair like the Pieces one at a little Atlanta flea market/vintage store last week (Highland Ave Antiques for Atlanta people). Wish I could have sold it for $2400! So fun!

  15. I have one of those swings in my son/daughter's room in our vacation house, however it was a fraction of the cost and is amazing! I'll have to post about it one day. E-mail for the trade information if you want the swing!

  17. PLEASE BUY IT! I came across a similar one a few weeks ago in a thrift store and of course it was gone when I came to my senses and went back. I've been kicking myself since. So cool.

  18. It is very funky-70's chic. I say go for it, especially if you can't stop thinking about it. There's nothing worse than missing out on a find. Good luck and keep us posted!

  19. they freak me out, BUT I toured some hotel guestrooms in Vegas last year at a Hospitality Design Show and Mr. Johnathan Adler had them in every room he designed. So you are in good company:)

  20. I love it!! If it were me I'd be there as soon as it opened to grab that little beauty! I see things and change my mind all the time too. Always disappointing when you go back and the thing you want is gone. Have a great weekend :)

  21. I might be the wrong person to ask about this bc there is just so much I love from the 70s but I could see this work. Here's my philosophy: if you see something that you are oddly drawn to but fear others might find it ugly - always buy it. Make it your own. A little "ugly, tacky, or wtf" will individualize your place like nothing else. Caveat: you really gotta love it. Doesn't work the same if you're just trying to be different. And in this case, I think you really love it. Hence the "can't get it out of my mind" thing!

  22. We had that EXACT chair at the bottom. It was called the "egg chair." Big hit in the 70's. That dates me :( Eventually it was moved outside under a tree in the yard where my brothers and I would spin each other around 'til we were sick. I have to say, when I wasn't being tortured in it (my oldest brother would never stop spinning), it was incredibly comfortably.

However, I don't love the top one. Don't mean to be rude. For me it's an unworthy resurrection. The proportions feel off. I don't like the stacked rattan on the ottoman. And unlike the "egg chair," this type of bent wood rattan furniture was kinda cheap. BUT, if you love it I agree with The Shiny Pebble, lacquer it in black or a bright color. And put some great graphic fabric on the cushion. It could be a nice statement piece. I always say: you can always sell it later, but if it's gone, you can't buy it later. Sorry to be so opinionated this morning.
