What Would You Do?

Did you see Camila's from High Heel Foot in the Door post on her DIY curtains? If not you have to check it out here.

She painted the stripes herself. And they look fabulous!! I thought it was a brilliant idea and I just had to try it myself. I have been looking for brown and white striped fabric for curtains and figured, heck, I'm crafty, I'll just paint them.

Thankfully, I decided to experiment with my laundry room curtain first. That's her, plain Jane. A few stripes was just what she needed. As much time as I spend in my laundry room, it should be the nicest room in my house.

I followed Camila's directions, measuring and taping off the stripes. Can you even see the tape?

Then I covered the areas that were not being painted with magazine pages so there would be no chance of accidental over spray. Don't worry, no design magazines were harmed in this painting project. Only my husband's golf magazines. I feel pretty sure he was finished with them. Plus, you've read one, you've read them all.

I was all excited...but it didn't work. My sprayer wouldn't spray and when it did it came out in drops...everywhere. Plan B. Buy bottles of black fabric paint and paint them on with a brush. It took forever.....

And looks like this. Yes, I only painted two stripes. I am not a patient woman. Now here is the question. What would you do? Finish painting the stripes...which may lead me to drink...a lot.

Or would you buy some ribbon and trim the panel out like this?
Luckily I have an extra white panel.

Maybe get fancy like this pillow.

Or this pillow...

Or even this headboard.
Opinions please. Finish the stripes or ditch it and start over with ribbon?

P.S. Please do not be afraid to try this at home. I think I just got a faulty sprayer and Camila's curtains turned out perfect!!! And just because I screwed up doesn't mean you will!!

  1. Hm. AFter all that trouble, maybe you should finish the stripes! But I do love the look of that tape. Would you just iron/glue it on? Can't wait to see what you do...

  2. I'd finish the stripes. The tape is cool, but I think it looks better on a surface that would hang flat or taut. It might get lost on a curtain.

  3. I would start over with ribbon...but I think that either would look okay

  6. Just a heads up. The Fabric Factory in Dallas has a thick stripe (thick like what you were trying to paint) Brown and White stripe cotton fabric that is very nice weight and could be run horizontally. I say call them, ask then to scan an image to you and if you like it, buy a few yards.

BTW, very pretty spaces in your house.

  7. Hmm that is a hard one. Probably continue painting, but I don't want to be responsible for large amounts of wine consumed!

I laughed out loud about the magazine part, oops there go the golf mags!

  8. Oh no! I'm sorry you had a hard time! Do you use the tulip fabric spray paint?

We had no problems at all. The first panel took a bit longer than I expected, but once we had the technique down panel 2 was done in a much shorter time frame.

Let me know if I can help with any other questions.

  9. Darn! I was so excited about that DIY. I wonder if the yellow was easier because it was a lighter color? I had thought about doing my own green and white stripes but was hesitating because I wasn't sure it would be worth it...Interested to see where you go from here!

  12. I think Camila's curtains are so cute but like you I have no patience. Your stripes are also cute but I always love the look of ribbon trim.

BTW, your dining room chandelier is fabulous!

  13. I have to agree with Laura at JourneyChic that your dining room is gorgeous :-). Now, to the question at hand. I think both could look really good. If it's more of pain do to the stripe, then I would do the ribbon because I am super crazy about ribbon trim, and if it drives you less crazy, why not?!

  14. Please, finish the curtain. I love the black and white and I'm planning on doing the same thing for my new living room.

  15. I think if the stripes were just a little thinner it would be perfect to leave it without more, but in this case they are a thicker so it may be better to finish them off. BUT on the other hand, I do like the curtain the way it is if you were to leave it. You should keep it the way you LOVE it :)

  16. I think I'd try to get a new bottle and try again, but that's me. I'm disappointed for you. I loved those panels she made.

  17. I have to say, I love the stripes - I want to try Camilla's method as well. But you know yourself, if you can't handle the patience it will take - go the ribbon route, it will look cute, too!

  18. I am fine with the way it looks now. Maybe, because I am tired of all my projects, ha! I do wish I had a pretty laundry room.
