Book Club

Is there anything better than a Coke, popcorn and a good book? The Coke and popcorn are easy. Finding a great book can be difficult, so I am here to help.
Just finished Cutting for Stone and loved it. Thanks Wendy for the recommendation. I can't wait to read his other book My Own Country. Cutting for Stone starts with the birth of Siamese twins. Oh, and did I mention their mother is a nun? Curious aren't you?
Then my friend Heather (who lives in Nashville and I never get to see) said she loved Orange is the New Black (My Year in a Women's Prison). That was all I needed. I ordered it from Amazon and when I got home yesterday there was a padded envelope waiting for me. It was like finding cute shoes on sale, total joy! I've already starting reading it and I am hooked!! I may even skip Dancing with the Stars tonight to read.

Has anyone read these books? What did you think? Do you have a favorite book that I should read?

PS Do you read the comments? Did you see the one from anonymous yesterday? The one that kind of hurt my feelings? What did they mean that Bill doesn't care about my day? What could be more exciting? I thought it was from an angry, bitter housewife. Evidently I am very gullible. I was telling Bill about it and he started cracking up. Yep, he wrote it. He thought I would know it was from him. Oh, he is a funny man, just a laugh a minute.

  1. LOL! I just read Bill's comment! Too funny...my husband also thinks I should greet him at the door with a beer, and from time to time when I shlep around in t-shirts from the 80s and yoga pants and a scowl...he will tell me how Nancy Reagan never let Ronnie see her like that, and they were married for over 50 years...my reply is not fit for your comments section. Anyway, just finishing up reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo...these look very promising, thanks for the tips!

  3. LOL, I recommended Cutting for Stone for publishing in my country (that's part of my job- reviewing books for publication) and it's really good! I just finished reading Jennifer Weiner's "best friends forever" and it was one of these books you read in one night- just what I needed.

  4. Thanks for the reading suggestions. I'm always looking for something new. I need to take more time to read. I just picked up Freedom by Jonathan Franzen - I loved the Corrections so hopefully this one will be good too.

And, yes, your husband is a riot (in his own mind) just like mine!

  5. Sissy! You honestly didn't know that was Bill-I was reading out loud to Arty cracking up because I knew it was! Anyway- let me know what you find that's good-I'm going to Barnes and Noble this week and I have NEW YORK by Edward Rutherford, Girl Who Played with Fire (part 2 of the girl with dragon tatoo), The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve But the Siamese twins and nun sound pretty interesting too!

  7. Cutting for Stone is one of my favorites. We read it for my book club and all of us just raved! Sure to be a classic! Have you read "The Help"? If not, this is another really good book. Totally different from Cutting for Stone, but good!

  12. I've heard good things about "Cutting for Stone" tonight I have my bookclub and that's going to be one of my recos. Also, has anyone read "Water for Elephants" I couldn't put it down. My third choice is "Never let me go" it' also on the movie circuit.
Hope this helps as I love reading. Also get excited about getting those amazon packages delivered to my door. It's like get a present, even though I paid for it! I love opening the package and seeing a pristine looking cover just waiting for me open the pages and drive into another adventure

  14. Thanks for the recommendations! I needed some new reading material. People keep giving me work books with names like "Proven Strategies for Dramatically Increasing Personal and Professional Success" - BORING. Why would I want to go home and read about work? I just read a book called The Passage that was pretty good. A friend read Little Bee and said it was good, too.

  15. Ellen Gilchrist...her best book, I think, is Net of Jewels. Growing up in the south, and so much more. Read it in grad school and fell in love (but so easy to read...not like Faulkner!)

  22. Looks like many of us are literally on the "same page". Also read "The Glass Castle", "The Help" and Water for Elephants--couldn't put it down (movie version with Reese Witherspoon and Twilight's Rob Pattison coming out in 2011) I've heard "Cutting for Stone" is good. It's on my 2011 list.
